It’s a day before my birthday and I’d like to share with you one of my most unforgettable birthdays so far.
It’s when I got my first car four years ago, on my 30th birthday.
It’s just a small, inexpensive car, and it may be worth nothing to some people, but for me, it’s a special car because of what I learned along the way before acquiring it.
Sometimes, it’s not how much it costs, but how much it’s worth.
(I wrote this blog post a few days after I got my car and this was originally published on my other blog, pinayinvestor.com, which I have now set to redirect to this site, thepinayinvestor.com.)
So, here’s my car story…
In February 2016, while I was at the mall with my sister, a sales agent approached me and asked if I’d like to buy a new car. He handed me a flyer and after checking it, I said, “Why not?” 🙂Â
The bright red Toyota Vios caught my attention.
So I went inside the car, checked the features, pretended like I was driving it, and acted as if it was already mine.
Then, I declared,
“I like this car and I’m going to have it on my 30th birthday!”
My sister laughed and said, “Go! Push mo yan ‘te!”, while taking a video of me.
I was also laughing, but I really meant what I said. The thought of having a car made me happy and excited.
It’s been my dream to have a car and I know I can have my own car someday but… I didn’t think it would be anytime soon due to my lack of resources.
When I went home, I told my husband about the car, but he just ignored me. He thought I was just joking because he knew that I could not afford to buy a car. I was a struggling work-at-home-mom who’s barely making any income from blogging and handling workshops.
But something inside of me kept saying, “If you want it, go get it.”
I didn’t know how I could get it, but I kept thinking about it.
I Attended Millionaire Mindset Seminar
On that same month, I attended the 3-day Millionaire Mindset Intensive (MMI) seminar, a training program based on T. Harv Eker‘s #1 New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today’s Bestseller, The Secrets of the Millionaire Mind.
It was the first time that MMI was held in Manila and I felt so lucky that I was able to attend it. I learned many things at the seminar and I used some of the techniques to pursue my dream of having a car.
I Kept Thinking About My Dream Car
One of the things I learned was the power of thought. I made it a habit to think and act as if the red car was already mine.
When I look at the garage, I would imagine that my red car was parked there.
Sometimes, I’d laugh at myself kasi feeling ko nababaliw na ako. 🙂Â
I Visualize My Dream CarÂ
I also followed various affirmation and visualization techniques to manifest my dream car.
I put a picture of a red car almost everywhere in the house. I placed car photos on the walls, on my journals, and in Macey’s room. I also set it as wallpaper on my cellphone and computer.
If you’d ask my 2-year old daughter who’s car was on the wall, she’d happily say, “It’s mommy’s red car!” 🙂
Yes, she knows about my dream car. I love telling her about it because she believes in me.
Everyday, we’d look at the car pictures together and I always tell her that we will ride in that car on my birthday. We get so kilig and excited every time we talk about the car.
My husband wasn’t as supportive as my daughter whenever I ask him to imagine about my dream car with me.
Pero kahit napipilitan at nakukulitan na siya sa akin, he’d always say,
“Go, kaya mo yan! Kung saan ka masaya, suportahan kita.”
Do you see that green car on my vision board? It’s actually my husband who put it there. He was making fun of me and he said he wanted to have a cute car too. I didn’t want it displayed on my vision board, but he always puts it back when I remove it. Pang asar lang. 🙂 Â
As I continued to think and pray for my dream car, I became more motivated to work harder and smarter. I also received unexpected opportunities that helped me fund my car’s down payment.
I Checked out the CarsÂ
My husband became more supportive when I told my him that I was really serious about having a car on my birthday.
We went to car showrooms to check and test-drive the cars. We talked about the models and the prices.
Since he knew more about cars, he gave me suggestions on what model I should get based on my budget.
I initially wanted to get a Toyota Vios or Honda Jazz, but considering my resources that time, I could only afford a mini-hatchback car that’s good enough for our small family.
I didn’t want to take the risk of getting a more expensive car because my income wasn’t stable yet and I didn’t want to compromise our family budget for the car payment.
When my husband told me that he found a car that fits my requirements, we hurriedly went to Suzuki to see the car.
The first time I saw the red Suzuki Celerio model, I fell in love with it right away.
I knew it was it. I knew it was mine. And I knew I was going to have it on my birthday.
We started processing our application papers. We talked to different sales agents from different branches to find the best deal.
3 days, 2 days, 1 day before my birthday…
No confirmation from the banks. No call backs from the sales agents.
But I did not lose hope. I still have more than 12 hours before my birthday.
Finally, on the evening of May 5, 2016, one of the agents called, but only to tell me that my car loan application was not approved.
I felt a bit anxious, but I did not give up on my dream car.
Instead, I surrendered it to God, and I said,
“Lord, kung para sa akin ang car na ito, alam kong ibibigay nyo to kahit ano pa ang mangyari.”
I was hopeful, but I was willing to accept it if I won’t get my dream car yet. I believe in God’s perfect timing and I was willing to wait.
May 6: Happy 30th birthday to me!
I woke up early. I prayed and thanked God for the gift of life, for the blessings that I have received, and for everything that I have yet to receive.
Then I said, “Lord, if you believe that I deserve to have one of my dreams come true today, and if it pleases you, may it be done according to your will.”
After that, I felt so much lighter, better, and happier.
I kissed my husband and my daughter who were both still sleeping. I felt so blessed for my family.
Then, my cellphone rang…
Ma’am, happy birthday! Approved na po ang car application nyo! Pwede nyo na po kunin car nyo anytime today!
I couldn’t believe what I just heard. My heart leaped for joy!
We went to Suzuki, picked up our new car, and drove it home.
My dream of having a car has come true and it happened exactly on my 30th birthday.
What a happy, happy birthday to me. Praise the Lord!
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. – Mark 11:24
My husband and I were in awe of how God made my dream come true. Things happened so quickly and it happened at the perfect time, His perfect time.
Sometimes, I wished I asked for a nicer or bigger car, but I believe God has a reason why we got the Celerio. And I know it’s for our own good.
Maybe I need to dream bigger, work smarter, and pray harder to achieve my bigger dreams.
But one thing is for sure: Nothing is impossible with God. This, plus focus and massive action will surely get us closer to our dreams.
I know this is just the beginning and there’s more to come. I am grateful for God’s blessings and I will always trust and delight in the Lord.
Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. – Psalms 37:4
