I got my first car on my 30th birthday, marking a significant moment in my life seven years ago.
It’s just a small, affordable car, and it might not mean much to some folks, but to me, it’s a special ride because of the valuable lessons I acquired on the journey to owning it.
Sometimes, it’s not how much it costs, but how much it’s worth.
(I wrote this blog post a few days after I got my car, and it was originally published on my other blog, pinayinvestor.com. Now, I’ve set pinayinvestor.com to redirect to this site, thepinayinvestor.com.)
So, here’s my car story…
In February 2016, while I was at the mall with my sister, a sales agent came up to me and asked if I wanted to buy a new car. He handed me a flyer and after giving it a look, I thought, “Why not?” 🙂
The eye-catching bright red Toyota Vios really grabbed my attention!
So, I hopped into the car, checked out all the cool features, pretended to be behind the wheel, and acted like it was already mine! 😄
Then, I declared,
I love this car and I’m totally going to get it for my 30th birthday! 😄
My sister giggled and cheerfully exclaimed, “Go for it! Push mo yan ‘te!”, while capturing a video of me.
While I burst into laughter, my words still held true. The mere notion of owning a car ignited a spark of joy and anticipation within me.
Owning a car has always been my dream, but unfortunately, my current financial situation makes it seem like it will be a while before I can make that dream a reality.
When I got home, I excitedly shared the car news with my husband, but he simply brushed it off. He thought I was joking, knowing well that buying a car was beyond our means. I was a work-at-home mom, juggling blogging and workshops, trying to make ends meet.
But something inside of me kept saying, “If you want it, go get it.”
I wasn’t sure how I could get it, but I couldn’t stop thinking about it. 😊
I Attended Millionaire Mindset Seminar
In that awesome month, I got the chance to attend the incredible 3-day Millionaire Mindset Intensive (MMI) seminar. It’s a mind-blowing training program inspired by T. Harv Eker‘s #1 New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today’s Bestseller, The Secrets of the Millionaire Mind.
I consider myself so lucky to have been there for the first-ever MMI held in Manila.
Let me tell you, it was a life-changing experience! I learned so many incredible things at the seminar and guess what? I even used some of the techniques to make my dream of owning a car come true. How cool is that? 😄
I Kept Thinking About My Dream Car
One of the things I learned was the incredible power of thought! I started making it a habit to think and act as if the red car was already mine. Whenever I looked at the garage, I couldn’t help but imagine my red car parked right in there, like it was meant to be! 😊🚗
Sometimes, I chuckle at myself because I feel like I’m going a little crazy. 😄
I Visualize My Dream Car
I also tried out various affirmation and visualization techniques to manifest my dream car. I stuck pictures of a red car almost everywhere in the house. They were on the walls, in my journals, and even in Macey’s room. I also made it my wallpaper on my cellphone and computer.
If you asked my 2-year-old daughter whose car that was on the wall, she would excitedly say, “It’s mommy’s red car!” 🙂 She knows all about my dream car, and I love sharing it with her because she truly believes in me.
Every day, we would look at the car pictures together, and I would always tell her that we will be riding in that car on my birthday. We both get so thrilled and excited whenever we talk about it.
Now, my husband wasn’t as supportive as my daughter whenever I asked him to imagine my dream car with me. But even though he felt forced and annoyed at times, he would always say, “Go for it! I’ll support you in whatever makes you happy.”
See that green car on my vision board? It’s actually my husband’s doing. He was teasing me and said he wanted a cute car too. I didn’t really want it on my vision board, but he keeps putting it back when I remove it. Just messing around. 🙂
As I kept thinking and praying for my dream car, it fueled my motivation to work harder and smarter. And you know what? I even got some unexpected opportunities that helped me fund the down payment for my car.
I Checked out the Cars
My husband became more supportive when I told him that I was really serious about having a car on my birthday.
We went to car showrooms to check and test-drive the cars. We talked about the models and the prices.
Since he knew more about cars, he gave me suggestions on what model I should get based on my budget.
I initially wanted to get a Toyota Vios or Honda Jazz, but considering my resources at that time, I could only afford a mini-hatchback car that was good enough for our small family.
I didn’t want to take the risk of getting a more expensive car because my income wasn’t stable yet and I didn’t want to compromise our family budget for the car payment.
When my husband excitedly informed me that he had found a car that met all my requirements, we quickly made our way to Suzuki to check it out.
The moment I laid eyes on the stunning red Suzuki Celerio model, I instantly fell head over heels in love with it!
I just knew it! I knew it was mine, and guess what? I’m gonna have it on my birthday! 😄
We’ve begun processing our application papers and reached out to various sales agents across different branches to secure the best deal. 😊
3 days, 2 days, 1 day before my birthday…
No confirmation from the banks. No callbacks from the sales agents. But don’t worry, I didn’t lose hope. I still had over 12 hours before my birthday.
Finally, on the evening of May 5, 2016, one of the agents called. Unfortunately, they informed me that my car loan application wasn’t approved.
It made me a bit anxious, but I didn’t give up on my dream car. Instead, I surrendered it to God and said, “Lord, if this car is meant for me, I know you’ll provide it no matter what happens.”
I remained hopeful but also willing to accept that I may not get my dream car just yet. I believe in God’s perfect timing and I’m willing to wait.
May 6: Happy 30th birthday to me!
I woke up bright and early in the morning. I took a moment to pray and express my gratitude to God for the precious gift of life, the blessings I’ve received, and the ones that are yet to come my way.
With a hopeful tone, I said, “Dear Lord, if it’s Your will, may one of my dreams come true today. Grant me this wish if You think I deserve it.”
Afterward, I felt a weight lifted off my shoulders, feeling lighter, happier, and more content. As my husband and daughter peacefully slept, I couldn’t help but feel incredibly blessed for my loving family.
And just when I thought the day couldn’t get any better, my phone started ringing… It was a call that made my heart skip a beat!
“Ma’am, happy birthday! Your car application has been approved! You can come and pick up your new car anytime today!”
I could hardly believe my ears. Pure joy rushed through every fiber of my being! We wasted no time and headed straight to Suzuki to get our brand-new car.
Driving it home, I couldn’t help but think how my dream had become a reality on my 30th birthday.
What an incredibly blissful and unforgettable birthday it turned out to be. All praise be to the Lord!
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. – Mark 11:24
I feel incredibly blessed that my dream has come true, and my husband shares my amazement at how quickly it all happened. We’re convinced that everything has worked out perfectly, according to God’s timing.
At times, I’ve wondered if maybe I should have asked for a more luxurious or spacious car, but I trust that there’s a good reason why we ended up with the Celerio. It’s all part of God’s plan for us.
Perhaps I need to aim higher, work more efficiently, and pray with more determination if I want to achieve even bigger dreams.
However, I know that with God, nothing is impossible. Along with focus and persistent effort, I’m confident that we’ll get closer to achieving our goals.
I’m grateful for all the blessings that God has bestowed upon us, and I’ll always put my faith and joy in Him. I know that this is just the start of many great things to come.
Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. – Psalms 37:4
